Recycle for Coventry - Coventry City Council

Blue lid - Recycling Bin

You will receive a new blue-lidded wheeled bin to replace your existing black box and blue box (if you have one). Your new bin will be delivered between September and November 2009.

Collections will be made on alternate weeks to your garden waste bin on the same day of the week as your rubbish bin. We will provide you with a calendar that details your collection dates when we deliver your new recycling bin along with further instructions on how to use it. We will also tell you when to start using your new bin – please continue to use your recycling boxes until then.

Frequently asked questions

  • When will the new collection start?

Depending on where you live in the city the collections will start between October and December 2009. We will let you know when we deliver your new bin.

  • Where will I put my bin for collection?

Once the new recycling collection starts please place your bin out for collection by 7am at the front of your property on the boundary, where your garden/path/steps join the public footpath, where it can be clearly seen and where it doesn't block the pavement or cause an obstruction to pedestrians. For most people there will be no changes from where you currently place your bins.

  • Why are boxes being changed to bins?

Now that you can recycle a wider range of materials the boxes are not large enough to safely contain all the items. Many residents would also find the boxes too heavy to move easily. Feedback has also shown that many residents have expressed a preference for wheeled bins.

  • I can't fit all of my recycling in the bin?

We will only be able collect waste that is contained in the bin with a closed lid. If you regularly have additional recycling that won't fit into your blue-lidded bin, you can request a second bin by calling Coventry Direct on 0500 834333. Alternately you can keep your additional recycling for the next collection or take it to your nearest recycling centre or the Public Waste Site (the tip) located on the London Road.

  • What time must my bin be out?

All bins need to be out for 7am. If bins are not out by 7am you may miss your collection. Collections crew cannot return if your bin is out late.

  • What if I put the wrong things my bin?

We will provide you with instructions on what materials you can recycle. If any other items are put into your bin, the recyclables become contaminated. Contaminated waste will not be collected. If your bin has the wrong materials in it the collections crew will put a label on your bin asking you to remove the inappropriate material. The bin will be emptied on the next collection day when the incorrect items have been removed.

  • Why is the service changing?

We are making improvements to your recycling service so that we can all recycle more and help protect our environment; it will:

    • Make it more convenient for you to recycle more materials
    • Allow you to recycle more, directly from home
    • Conserve our natural resources by converting used materials into new products
    • Save energy
    • Help protect our local environment

  • What day will my collections take place?

Your recycling collections will take place fortnightly on the same day of the week as your rubbish collection. A collection calendar will be delivered along with you new recycling bin.

  • I need help moving my bin. What do I do?

Assisted collections are available for residents with limited mobility, or where there is no-one residing in the property able to move the bin to the boundary. If you would like to request an assisted collection please contact Coventry Direct on 0500 834333.

  • Can I have a smaller recycling bin?

If you have a small rubbish bin you can request a small recycling bin. Please phone Coventry Direct on 0500 834333.
